New Article Feature: The Association Between Teacher Distress and Student Mental Health Outcomes

New findings from the School Mental Health Surveys in Ontario, Canada involving 23,568 students, 1,478 teachers, and 268 schools suggest that teacher mental health is associated with student mental health in a small, but significant manner among elementary school students. This relationship was moderated by student perceptions of school safety. These results suggest that decision makers in the education system should prioritize addressing feelings of distress among students and teachers moving forward. Additionally, targeting risk factors within the school environment to improve perceptions of school safety may improve outcomes for educators and those they serve.
