Three of AYM’s Trainees Received CIHR Awards

Congratulations to Jordan Edwards, Anne Fuller, and Shamini Selvakumar for receiving CIHR awards/fellowships for their work focused on improving child and youth mental health and well-being in Canada!

Jordan Edwards is a Post-Doctoral Fellow on the AYM team. He will be working towards the development of a public health surveillance system of mental-ill health among children and youth in Canada. His goal is to leverage the strengths of all available data sources to produce reliable estimates that are more accurate, precise, and representative of Canada’s diverse population, than any one data source alone. Starting in Ontario, he will work with our team to establish population mental health metrics for surveillance using the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study linked to health administrative data.

Anne Fuller is a PhD student supervised by Dr. Kathy Georgiades. Her PhD will aim to generate a data-informed conceptual model of income-related risks and protective factors for child mental health in Ontario. The model will use the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study to describe how individual child, family and neighbourhood characteristics may reduce the detrimental effects of low-income on child mental health.

Shamini Selvakumar is a Master’s student supervised by Dr. Kathy Georgiades. Her thesis will examine levels of physical activity engagement between immigrant and non-immigrant youth and intends to assess the extent to which mental health, including mood and anxiety disorders, and socio-economic factors may explain these differences using the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study.
